New Minister of State for Health

Immediate past Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Emmanuel Ehanire and former Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Senator Adeleke Olurunnimbe Mamora were sworn in today by President Muhammadu Buhari as Minister of Health and Minister of State for Health respectively along with 41 other ministers in the new  administration.

Dr. Ehanire, 73, and Mamora, 66, both medical doctors and politicians are expected to run the affairs of the nation’s health ministry in the next four years.

Dr.  Ehanire was first appointed as Minister of State for Health in the President Muhammadu Buhari administration in November 2015. He began his medical career in Germany where he worked  as Resident Anesthesiologist, Resident Vascular Surgeon and Resident General Surgeon in Thoracic Surgery at various hospitals. He also served as Clinical Instructor, Fracture Internal Fixation Course at BG Accident Hospital in Duisburg, Germany.

On his return to Nigeria in 1982, he worked at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital as Senior Registrar in the Department of Surgery (Orthopedic Surgery), a position he held until 1984. Between 1985 and 1990, he joined the Shell Petroleum Development Company Hospital as a Divisional Consultant Surgeon.  He also served at various times on the medical review board of Edo State Hospital Management Board and remains as a Trustee of TY Danjuma Foundation.

Not much is known about Dr. Mamora’s career in the health sector. He is however a seasoned politician.

Mamora holds a  B.Sc degree in Health Sciences and MBBS  (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) from the old University of Ife, Ile-Ife.  He  was Medical Director of a Medical Centre and also  a Company Medical Adviser.

As a Senator, Dr. Mamora sponsored bills on Surgeon-General of Nigeria and the repeal and amendment of the Tobacco Control Act.
