The centre, designed to treat patients resistant to drugs, is equipped with cutting-edge facilities to combat the spread of TB. Hajiya Zainab Nasare emphasized the importance of this facility, citing the numerous lives lost to curable diseases like tuberculosis. “With this treatment centre, many lives will be saved through effective drugs that work on patients resistant to drugs,” she explained.
The First Lady also highlighted efforts to discourage stigmatization against people living with tuberculosis, emphasizing the permanent cure available for the disease. She encouraged patients, particularly those resistant to normal drugs, to seek free treatment at the centre.
Dr. Bello Umar Tambuwal, representing the Federal Ministry of Health, praised the establishment of the centre, noting that Kebbi State had long advocated for such a facility. He revealed that 100 children with tuberculosis had already been cured through free treatment and feeding.
Commissioner for Health Alhaji Yunusa Musa Ismail thanked the First Lady for her interventions in the health sector and confirmed that doctors’ salaries have been increased to match those in other tertiary health facilities nationwide.
Chairman Argungu Local Government Alhaji Aliyu Musa Gulma commended Hajiya Zainab and Governor Nasir Idris for their positive impact on the community’s wellbeing.
Before the commissioning ceremony, the First Lady paid homage to the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammadu Mera, demonstrating respect for traditional institutions.
Nigeria’s ongoing struggle against tuberculosis has taken on renewed urgency, given the staggering 10 million new cases reported globally in 2020. To effectively control the spread of this disease, it’s crucial that treatment and management strategies are implemented promptly and efficiently.
