NIMR hosts Japanese experts to strengthen research efforts

The Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), on Monday received a team of nine medical experts from the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) as part of ongoing efforts by the institute under the new management led by Prof. John Obafunwa to strengthen collaboration with other medical research bodies across the world.

The visitors met with the DG along with senior staff of the the institute for discussions on how to  enhance research efforts in areas such as viral culturing, pathogen studies and HIV research.

In his welcome address, NIMR DG, Prof Obafunwa, stressed that the institute aims at upping the standards of medical researches conducted in Nigeria as well as to further promote and develop viable structures for the dissemination of research findings.

He emphasised NIMR’s commitment to advancing medical research and fostering collaboration with international bodies.

The JICA team was later taken on a tour of key research departments, including the Bio-Bank Laboratory Cancer Research Centre and other departments such as Public Health and Epidemiology, Bio-Bank Laboratory, Department of Microbiology, Biomedical Training and Cancer Research Centre, among many others.

Shiyeoshi Harada, who spoke on behalf of the visitors, expressed his delight in the level of advancement and state-of-the-art equipment available in various laboratory room in the institute.

He commended the DG, Prof Obafunwa and members of NIMR board of directors.
