Nigeria needs Podiatrists

Participants at the ongoing workshop on Podiatry and Diabetes Foot care workshop were told this morning that Nigeria must train Podiatrists to manage the growing number of diabetes patients now developing foot complications.

A podiatrist is a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM), also known as a podiatric physician or surgeon who diagnoses and treat conditions of the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg.

The Project coodinator, Diabetes Podiatry Initiative, Nigeria, Dr. Afokoghene Isiavwe disclosed that non of the nation’s medical school teaches Podiatry as a course while there is no institution specifically designed to train doctors on foot care which is a major complication of diabetes.

This is why, she said, Rainbow Specialist Medical Centre, a leading diabetes care hospital, in partnership with the World Diabetes Foundation established the diabetes podiatry initiative to help train Nigerian diabetes care givers.
