The first batch of 2016 Medical & Dental graduands of College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Idi-Araba have been charged to go out and contribute their quota in the society by practicing their profession ethically and working as a team with other members of health team.

Professor Folabi Lesi, Provost of College of Medicine University of Lagos gave this charge yesterday at the College campus in Idi-Araba, Lagos, during the Medical & Dental induction ceremony.

He said the country had invested in their education to produce them as doctors so, they owe it to the society to practice ethically and work with other members of the health team.

“I think that is very important; teamwork is one of the things that I think we need to emphasize. There are so many rivalries between professional groups and it is not necessary, it is not helpful, the patient suffers.

“So I charge the young doctors today to go out and work as part of health team that will improve the lots of Nigerians and hopefully very soon, nobody would have to go out for healthcare because we are contributing our quota to healthcare delivery,” he said.

Prof. Lesi told the new doctors that the induction ceremony is an important event in their career as they cannot do internship without it “because this is where the medical council issues you a provisional license to practice,” he added.

The guest lecturer at the event who spoke on the topic ’Oasis of Excellence’ Dr Kunle Onakoya, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Lagoon Hospital, Lagos, also charged the young doctors not be discouraged by all that we read, hear and learn about our society but be focused and become a force for good in the society.

In an interview with journalists, Dr Onakoya said: “They need to strive for excellence because I think at the end of the day that is the only way we can begin to overcome the rot that seems to pervade every area of our society. Essentially, the lecture was a charge to let them understand that they are privileged but it is high time they gave back to the society and help to create that culture of excellence that we also desire,” he said.

In the same vein, Chairman College of Medicine Alumni Association, Dr Ajibayo Adeyeye, told the inductees that MBBS or BDS degree is not an end in itself but a means to an end. He therefore charged them to go and be good ambassadors of the college of the Medicine University of Lagos.

“Go out there and excel in everything you do not only in the field of medicine but also in the field of administration. You should not see yourselves only as doctors but as leaders of the society,” Dr Adeyeye advised.

Dr. Azeez Arisekola:  Best graduating Dental doctor

A major highlight of the occasion was the award  of the best graduating Dental doctor to Alade Azeez Arisekola who emerged with eight awards. Arisekola told newsmen he was able to achieve the feat because he has always aimed at being the best in whatever he does. He said he is aspiring to get higher qualifications before moving on.

His advice to aspiring doctor: “I will advise them to always be the best in whatever they do and they should also try to help people around them because one thing I have always done is to engage myself in associations in school just to help people that are coming up and that has really helped me because it makes it easier for me to remember what I have been taught in the previous years which is very important in you doing what you do,” Arisekola said.
