The President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Kayode Obembe says incessant strikes by Nigerian doctors have persisted because government is still not fulfilling its promises to them.
Speaking on Channels TV ‘News at 10′ Thursday, Dr. Obembe said the Federal Government should always ensure that circulars on the implementation of various agreement with the doctors are “cashed backed” to prevent doctors’ strikes.
He disclosed that some hospitals are still not paying the Consolidated Medical Salary approved by the government and called on the federal government “to beam its anti-corruption light” to such hospitals so as to stop the doctors’ strike.
On the challenges faced by doctors in the country, the NMA President cited lack of security for those on night duties, a situation which, according to him, has resulted in many doctors being kidnapped in different parts of the country.
Dr. Obembe also decried “police harassment” of doctors when they treat patients with gun shot wounds saying the association had once visited the Inspector General of police to complain about the trend to no avail.
