• Advises beach revelers to be mindful of turbulence ocean surge

• Urges motorists to cooperate with safety agencies

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has admonished Nigerians to be safety-conscious in this period of Muslim festival, especially as the rains continues.

In his Eid el-Kabir message the Director General of the agency, Engr Mustapha Maihajja charged parents and guardians to be extra vigilant in keeping watch on their children and wards at all times.

He also called on beach revelers to be watchful of the unstable and turbulence ocean surge currently being witnessed across the coastlines.

He warned beach operators to take all necessary action to make sure that the revelers’ safety are of high priority.

Engr Maihajja in the same vein cautions both private and commercial watercraft operators to ensure that their routes along the inland ways are log-free while they must have installed all gadgets on their ferries and boats, especially those operating at nights must ensure commiserate lightning and must not waste time in contacting agencies in case of emergency promptly.

“Watercafter operators must ensure that all passengers use live jackets that are effective,” he said, noting that overloading has been attributed to be the main causes of the most watercraft capsizing. He therefore, advised intending passengers to avoid being overloaded no matter the assurances of the operators.

While acknowledging the efforts of various road traffic safety agencies at ensuring accident-free festival, the Director General, however advocates the cooperation of motorists with the operatives for safety of lives.

He also enjoined the passengers on commercial vehicles to be at alert and not hesitate to draw the attention of enforcement agents along the road of any signs that pose risk for safe journey.

The Director General further enjoined all to make use of the national emergency toll free line 112 for help or alert on whatever they see as unusual.
