UBTH commences free cancer screening

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), today, kicked off the January edition of its “Giving back” series – a build up to the golden jubilee of the hospital – with a free screening exercise  for cervical, breast and prostate cancers for members of the public.

The event which was organized by the Management of the hospital in conjunction with the Central Working Committee of the UBTH@50 also featured health talks on the three types of cancer as well as general tips on healthy lifestyle.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof Darlington Obaseki in a welcome address stated that the hospital had to come up with this exercise in view of the high prevalence of cancer in the society and for the fact that it has become a leading cause of death in Nigeria. He also noted that whereas mortalities are high in advanced cases, they are preventable if detected early.
In attendance at the free screening were the Vice Chancellor, UNIBEN Prof. L. Salami, DVC Ekenwan and Imam of UNIBEN Prof. B.A. Ayinde, Hon. Comm of Health, Edo state and the Permanent Sec who were both represented by the Director of Public Health Dr. Ojeifo Stephenson.

Others were the Chaplain, All Saints Chapel, UNIBEN represented by Revd Can. Uche Iwuozo, MD Independent Television and Radio Engr. Elvis Obaseki, GM Radio Nigeria / Bronze FM Benin Mrs Abimbola Oyetunde, GM Edo Broadcasting Service Mrs. Queenet Orobedo reps by Director Administration Mr Christopher Oboh and MD LAPO NGO, Dr. Honestus Obadiora among other notable personalities present.

The free cancer screening will last till 31st January, 2023.
